Annie Bone (1881-?) was born on the 25th of January 1881 to John William Bone, a Newcastle hairdresser, and his wife Esther (née Hewson) who did most of the actual bearing. Annie was their first child and was delivered at home — as was the custom at the time — at 11 Buckingham Street in Elswick. Two months later, in April, the 1881 census shows that the three of them were still living there. So it appears to have been a stable environment. At least for a couple of months.

By the time of the 1891 census, still at 11 Buckingham Street, Annie had been joined by a sister Esther (born at home on the 11th of October, 1883) and two brothers John Joseph (born 1885) and Thomas (1889-1948). Later in 1891 Annie briefly had a third brother, George William — but he did not survive long and had died by the end of that year. In late 1892 another brother arrived, also named George William. He would live rather longer.

In 1895 William Styles, her husband-to-be, was released from detention at the Ragged and Industrial School at Garth Heads in Newcastle where he'd been for over six years. We do not know how or when they met, but both had left Newcastle and they married at the Holy Trinity church in Tynemouth on the 15th January 1901. She wasn't to be 20 years old for another ten days and he, a barman, was himself only a little over the required age of 21, so - technically - he was marrying a minor. But it wasn't all that uncommon.

They must have moved on fairly quickly since Annie's first child, Annie Catherine Styles, was born a year later on 24 May 1902 over the river in Felling - at 19 Norman Street.
